The Carrier Bus
1979 MCI MC5C
Conversion started in June 2002. This is the bus 27 months later.
These are pics of the door now nearly complete but was actually built in October 2003
Here is the explanation of how I built my own door using the original two pieces that came with the bus.
This is what the finished product looks like. |

Discussion about the hinges |
|
About the splicing of the two original doors. |
|
Notice the hinge locations. They are all on the only portion of the door that is straight. Five hinges. Note that I found stainless hinges that very closely fit the original hole pattern of the door and siding. | |
This shows the hinges and the type of bolt used to install them on the door. The frame side of the hinge was installed with Hex head type ss bolts. |
|
The inside of the door was built with 0.065 Aluminum sheet. |
|
The door has the aluminum sheet installed all the way to the top. You are seeing the maroon vinyl material glued to the door but without any Oak trim at this time. |
Final thoughts about the door.
Besides a drill I did use a jig saw and a grinding wheel for cutting out the key hole and the handle. This was a relatively easy project to assemble. Now that the concept is here, I would suspect that others will do it also.
