The BUS BARN

It was the summer of 1996!  I decided to build the barn. I went to get a building permit and the building inspector thought he was God's answer to the local building economy and he made sure we knew it.  %^#*@# !  Oh well, I learned a long time ago that in this type of case you simply go with the flow.  I hired an Engineer to draw a set of plans that detailed every aspect of the barn necessary to satisfy you know who (YKW).  I also had to have a STATE OF MAINE Engineer seal on the plans.  They did.  When I told YKW that I was building a barn he made sure I knew that I could not have animals.  The zoning would not permit it.  I told him it was a "TOY" barn.  You know, Toys!  My toy was going to be a bus.   YKW was not impressed. Too bad.  Anyways, I ended up with a PERMIT for a 36' x 50' barn, 16' to the bottom of the rafters, and it would have a metal skin on a wooden skeleton, a massive wooden skeleton.  I did not want any posts in the center of the barn.  The entire roof would be supported by the side walls.  The roof carries a 5/12 pitch and is designed for the 55 pound per square foot snow load we can get here in Maine.  Wow! what a barn. You can click on most pics to get the larger version if available.
